As the first all-female refereeing trio in the history of the men’s World Cup, Stéphanie Frappart, Neuza Back, and Karen Diaz will be in charge of Thursday’s Group E match between Costa Rica and Germany. This will make history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

After serving as the fourth official in a Group C match between Mexico and Poland last week, Frappart will make her men’s World Cup debut as the primary referee.

The French referee, who is 38 years old, is no stranger to breaking records. She became the first woman to officiate a men’s Champions League match in 2020, a men’s World Cup qualifying match, and this year’s French Cup final match. She was likewise head ref in the 2019 Ladies’ Reality Cup last for FIFA.

The men’s World Cup is the world’s most significant sporting event. Frappart said, referring to her participation in the Champions League and French Cup, “I know how to deal with it because I was the first [female] referee in France and in Europe.”

Frappart will have assistance from Brazil’s Neuza Back and Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina in the match.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, stated of the three referees prior to the World Cup, “They were not selected because they are women, but as FIFA referees.” Any game could be officiated by them.

Kathryn Nesbitt, a fourth female match official from the United States, will serve as the offside specialist for the video review team at Al Bayt Stadium.

Two additional women, Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan and Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda, are among the 36 FIFA referees selected to oversee games in Qatar.

On December 2, the 2022 World Cup’s group stage will end, and 16 teams will advance to the knockout stage.

Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, is last in Group E and must defeat Costa Rica to advance to the round of 16.At the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar on Thursday, December 1, the match is scheduled to take place.

Since Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup in 2010 due to the country’s human rights record and the fact that homosexuality is illegal there, the tournament has been mired in controversy. Germany and six other European nations were recently threatened by FIFA with sanctions if their players wore rainbow-printed “One Love” armbands to support LGBTQ rights in Qatar. During the tournament, players who break the rules will receive yellow cards.

Before Wednesday’s World Cup opener against Japan, Germany’s players protested the new policy by covering their mouths for the team photo. During England’s World Cup match against Wales on Wednesday, UK Sports Minister Stuart Andrew wore the One Love armband. Similarly, during the Portugal-Uruguay match on Monday night, a protester ran onto the field and waved a rainbow flag.
